Pre-Pointe Assessments

A dancer en pointe in a contemporary pose.

What is a pre-pointe assessment?

A pre-pointe assessment is a 60-minute physiotherapy session with Rachelle. In order to determine readiness for pointe, Rachelle looks at numerous aspects of a dancer’s strength, balance, and control. Some of these things include:‍

  • Double and Single Leg Rises,
  • Single Leg Balance,
  • Core Control,
  • Ankle Mobility,
  • and Intrinsic Foot Strength.

Rachelle also takes into account a dancer’s age, health, dance experience and history of injuries, and their dance teacher’s written or verbal observations and comments. Following an assessment, and with the dancer’s permission, a summarized report can be sent to their dance teacher(s).

It is important to know that pre-pointe assessments often identify areas that a dancer can improve. It is very typical to receive a few corrections and strengthening exercises. The dancer is given 3 to 6 weeks to work on them and then returns for a follow-up physiotherapy session.

Why choose Rachelle to complete your pre-pointe assessment?

Rachelle has a 20+ year background in a variety of dance genres, including 8 years of dancing en pointe. She knows first-hand the importance of strength, control and injury prevention.

Rachelle has completed many pre-pointe assessments since graduating with her MScPT in 2020. She has participated in pointe courses to increase her understanding of the requirements and stresses of pointe work. She is excited to continue pursuing evidence-based practices through professional development opportunities.

How do I book a pre-pointe assessment?

You can make an appointment for an individual pre-pointe assessment directly with Rachelle (using the link below or via email).

If a dance teacher would like a whole class assessed, Rachelle is available on weekends to book individual appointments at the designated studio. It’s a great way to see all the dancers!

Rachelle offers pre-pointe assessment services to the Greater Calgary area, including Okotoks, Cochrane and Chestermere.
